Why do humans wear clothes? This question may seem like an oddity unless you are a fashion designer. If your job is to design new trends and market them to the public, then you should have a clear idea of why people wear clothes. Of course, nobody wakes up in the morning and asks this question before donning the dress for the day.
However, you must understand that this question affects many people in different ways on a subconscious level. This is evident from the fact that fashion historians and designers have grappled with this question for the past five centuries or more. Michel de Montaigne raised this question in the 16th century and came up with the answer that it is an aspect or part of our evolutionary process. He believed that humans were complete without clothes and that wearing clothes set us apart from nature.
On the other hand, Sylvia Bliss wrote on this issue in the early 20th century concluded that humans, unlike other animals, felt incomplete unless they wore clothes. You will obviously see the difference between the answer that evolved in the 16th century and the answer that evolved in recent times. The latter answer focuses on not just the historical aspect but also on the psychological aspect of clothes.
There are many persons who feel that wearing bright colors makes them look good. Whether they do look good or not is irrelevant. As a fashion designer, your job is to understand these motivations and take advantage of the same to impress people and make them happy.
If you get this right most of the time, chances are high that you will invariably end up as a very popular designer whose products are always in high demand. On the other hand, if you make people feel that they are incomplete after they wear clothes, you will obviously not enjoy a good response.
