If you are designer, do not make the mistake of thinking that finding that next brilliant idea is all about ignoring everything and focusing on the fabric or paper in front of you. If you want to create the right design that will appeal to a large number of persons, you should understand the historic timeline of the fashion trend that you are following.

Bell bottoms were very popular in the sixties. Since then, this fashion has returned at regular intervals. So much so that people have recognize that bell bottoms were not a passing fad and that it is something that appeals to a specific age group irrespective of the generation. If you come up with an idea based on bell bottoms, chances are high that you will be appreciated but it certainly cannot be classified as the next big thing.

It has become too regular and normal for its own good. On the other hand, if you come up with something that has made a comeback but still is understated or underplayed, you can easily make it the next big idea. This means that you should have proper theoretical knowledge of the origin of fashion and the historic timeline involved.

This may be a far cry from your idea of being a designer who has hands on approach and focuses on creating ideas through sheer hard work. That your idea can be crystallized from history books is something that you may not have been prepared for.

Well, the right designer is one who understands what is needed and proceeds ahead. Of course, this does not mean you should completely eschew your own methods and focus on a bookish approach. Yet, treating books and theoretical knowledge as enemies of fashion designing does not make sense either. You need to strike the right balance early on.
